The Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II hip implant systems are the latest in a series of metal-on-metal ball and socket implants. They have been used in over 20,000 patients in the United States since they were released in February of 2010.
These hip implants, which utilize a modular system of different-sized, interchangeable necks and stems, were marketed as a better fitting, more comfortable device. However, they have recently been linked to serious side effects and health dangers.
In April of 2012, Stryker warned doctors that corrosion and fretting from the Rejuvenate and ABG II hip implants could release metallic shavings into area tissue, bones and the bloodstream. This is due to the wear of the joined components, which are made of toxic metals such as chromium, cobalt and titanium.
Numerous studies have suggested that the release of metal shavings into tissue, bone or into the bloodstream can have severe side effects. Among these are allergic reactions, bone loss, soft tissue damage, vision or hearing problems or even tumors and cancer. Unfortunately, many of these side effects can take years to surface.
Since Stryker failed to properly test for these side effects or warn patients of the dangers, they are liable for the damages caused. Lawyers are currently helping those affected file claims.
If you or a loved one received a Stryker Rejuvenate or ABG II hip implant, you may be entitled to substantial compensation. Contact us today to speak with a lawyer about your legal options.
On July 6, 2012, Stryker Orthopedics issued a recall of the Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck hip implant systems and indicated that they would cease manufacture and sales of the devices worldwide. Although the company has offered reimbursement for testing and removal, they have not offered patients full compensation for metallic poisoning or their resulting damages.
While no one should file a lawsuit unless the actions of a company have caused them harm, a lawyer can explain how the maker of these hip systems marketed them without properly testing for their safety or potential for metallic poisoning. Also, they have not offered adequate compensation for victims as part of the recall.
You should not have to endure the pain, inflammation, swelling, tissue damage, metallic poisoning or revision surgery associated with a defective hip implant without help simply because of the negligence of a large medical device company.
